IWP White Oak Grade Specifications

Our Rift, Quartersawn, and Plainsawn White Oak specifications are designed to provide clarity and consistency for customers purchasing appearance-driven White Oak products.

SPEC 01

Rift

A Rift FAS board is characterized by the grain, or growth rings, of the log running parallel, less than 20 degrees deviation, to the edges of the board and presenting 3/8 inch or less between the grain on 90% of the FAS face of the piece. The medullary rays, or flecks, must be 1/8 inch or less in width and present parallel, less than 20 degrees deviation, to the grain of the board on 20% or less of the piece. The rift characteristics on the reverse face of an FAS Rift board are disregarded. An F1F board must meet the requirements for Rift on the FAS face of the board.

SPEC 02

Plainsaw in Rift Spec

Plainsaw is defined as an area of wood on an FAS Rift board where either the grains of the piece are too wide, more than 3/8 inch, or the grains deviate from parallel more than 20 degrees. Plainsawn characteristics as so defined are allowed on up to 10% of the FAS Rift face of the board. This means 10% of the board, not 10% of the cutting units.

SPEC 03

Quarter in Rift Spec

Quartersaw is defined as an area of wood on an FAS Rift board where either the medullary rays of the piece are too wide, more than 1/8 inch, or the medullary rays deviate from parallel more than 20 degrees. Quartersaw characteristics as so defined are allowed on up to 20% of the FAS Rift face of the board.

SPEC 04

Quartersawn FAS Spec

A Quartersawn FAS board is characterized by the medullary rays of the board presenting wider than 1/8 inch or deviating more than 20 degrees from parallel on more than 20% of the board, while plainsaw characteristics present as less than 10% of the FAS Quartersawn face of the board.
